Post-Production Stress Disorder: Preventing Mishaps After Wrapping Up Production

By January 17, 2018September 13th, 2023No Comments

Imagine an editor in Orange County is sitting down to edit an Internet product video for shoes aimed at millennials. He opens the project and starts to scrub through the footage.  To his horror, he sees that everything was shot at the wrong frame rate.

He calls the producer.  The producer calls the director.  The director calls the cinematographer.  It’s chaos, but it doesn’t matter to the client, the shoe company, because the video they spend a lot of money on is ruined.

Mistakes can happen to anyone, but a mistake this big is often due to the age of the video company or incompetence of someone’s part. By taking a few measures, preventing major accidents and mistakes after wrapping up production can be reduced. Here’s what you can do:

Double Check, Then Re-check

On set, double check all the camera settings. When you import a card or drive on set, play the footage back to make sure it looks right. Taking careful steps to make sure all the settings are correct will alleviate many headaches in post-production.

Keep a Backup for Your Backup

A successful entrepreneur knows that you can’t be too careful. In order to get ahead of competition and secure success, you need to have a backup plan. This is especially true when it comes to hard drives. Sometimes they crash, sometimes they’re just bad to begin with, and sometimes they get dropped.

Therefore, make sure the raw footage has two copies made, and the project is backed up in post. These back-ups should be stored in a place the originals aren’t.

But the footage and projects aren’t the only thing you should have backups for. Scripts, releases, licenses, contracts – everything that is important should be backed up. If something is digital, use cloud technology to store it. This is important because if your computers malfunction, you will be able to access data from anywhere around the world.

Check for Hazards

Make sure the editing area is clean and organized. This is especially true for cable organization, as post-production setups require a lot of cables.  Don’t put drinks next to the computer or hard drives. And make sure the electronics don’t get too hot (or cold).

Anti-Virus Software

This is something many businesses forget! After you’re done filming, it’s important to store your data and back it up. However, it’s also important to scan your computers to make sure there aren’t any viruses. This is important because it can cause damage or cause a loss of important data.

Hire a Professional Video Production Company

A professional video agency can help you avoid the stresses that sometimes come with hiring an independent videographer. By bringing their top-of-the-line equipment and backup resources, they can save you the headaches that come with working with amateurs.

They’re experienced professionals who know what they are doing.
